Job Title: Museum/Gift Shop Manager

Department: General Office

Reports To: Executive Assistant to the Executive Director

FLSA Status: Nonexempt – 12 month position

Salary Grade: 7B ($16.54 - $19.43 - $22.33)

SUMMARY 

 

Assists in cultivating the educational and interactive atmosphere of the museum and gift shop by providing operational support for the museum and gift shop and by providing information about the organization and exhibits to visitors, students, staff and donors. Promotes the sharing of that knowledge by completing the following duties. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. * Indicates the non-essential duties and responsibilities.  Nothing in this job description restricts St. Labre's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.

  1. Opens and closes museum/gift shop at designated hours, greets visitors, distributes promotional materials, answers questions concerning exhibits and facilities.

  2. Manages gift shop inventory through the use of Point of Service technology with a high level of accuracy, provides reports on sales and purchasing needs, both online and in person, as needed. 

  3. Prepares reports weekly to accompany gift shop deposits.

  4. Takes measures to ensure the safety of artifacts both in storage and on display and to ensure the ethical care and use according to best practices. Provides reports on the needs of the exhibits to supervisor. 

  5. Aids in recruitment of tour guides and the coordination of tour guide scheduling from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend.

  6. Aids in the commissioning of Native American merchandise for sale in the gift shop, primarily in the off season months. 

  7. Conducts/arranges tours of museum and facility for donors, schools or other groups and visitors and schedules volunteers or other staff members to conduct tours.

  8. Gives special presentations to visitors/groups as requested.

  9. Maintains and reports on the current museum catalog and inventory of all items in the collection and on new acquisitions across all campuses.

  10. Promotes the preservation and revitalization of Native American languages, primarily the Northern Cheyenne and Crow languages, by helping to coordinate the recording of the museum catalogue names in both Northern Cheyenne and Crow written and spoken languages. 

  11. Provides budgetary input for museum and gift shop. 

  12. Assists curator(s) in creating and maintaining the safe storage and monitoring of artifacts and fine arts items. 

  13. Provides training, education and guidance to staff and students through specialized knowledge of the museum and museum practices.

  14. Provides input for planning, organizing, staffing and coordinating activities and museum events both promotional and educational.

  15. Promotes the gift shop through the writing of a blog. 

  16. Assists in the development and drafting of procedures and management plans for the overall collection and other management and promotional content for the museum. 

  17. Serves as primary backup for Receptionist for leave, daily lunches and breaks.

  18. Maintains an appropriate manner of dress that projects a positive and professional image to the public.

  19. Performs other duties as assigned.

  20. This position requires seasonal holidays and weekend work.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

High School diploma or G.E.D.; one-year related experience and/or training required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Native American alumni of St. Labre preferred.

  8. Ability to work overtime, if needed, including holidays and weekends.

  9. Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
